Hi There,
I am looking for a solution to connect some kind of storage device to my home router so that it can be like a home server that all computers in the network (wired and wi-fi) could use its files OTA (especially HD vids).
I am going to buy 4 2-3GB HDD's.
It is really important that i could watch FHD videos (compressed 720-1080p mkv or similar) with no jittering over wi-fi...
I also want something that i could connect to my TV and stream my contents directly without a computer (although this is less important).
What kind of solution do you recommend?

Find an old machine, a NAS doesnt need to be anything special. Hook up your HDD's, install something like FreeNAS onto it, and you should be set up to use it as a home server as far as pure data storage is concerned.

As for smooth playback of those files, I imagine thats going to be constrained by your router. A HDD is far faster than WiFi, and so is the Ethernet connection it has to the router.

Playback on the TV will depends on its capabilities, if you just have a bog standard TV then your probably out of luck. You could connect the NAS to the TV, install a more traditional Linux OS so you get a GUI and install something like XMBC to act as the NAS end of it. That way you could watch stuff on the TV, while also upgrading it to a "Smart TV" for your troubles.
