Minimum RAM(Physical) for GPUs

Hello there, I am currently planning to get a GTX 780 however, I've read somewhere that it is recommended to have 12GB of DDR3 RAM whilst I am only planning to get 8GB... Will this affect performance?

Dont know where you read that. Different GPUs do have minimum requirements, they are stated on the box, but its usually only 1 or 2 gig, maybe 4 for some higher end cards. However, when planning to run a powerful GPU, it is of course helpful if you have a PC powerful enough to use it. 8gig of ram would be advised.
