Sometimes a BIOS reset can fix this though it is an external HDD.. Happened to me with my samsung hard drive after i was using it when i suffered from power outage to my house. Really bumbed as well.. I did get all my data back though!! Literally everything was intact after it said it wanted formatting.. The whole drive was full as well. All 1000 gigs of it. Windows said it was empty as well xD Scanned it using software and got everything back with the proper files names and folders/ subfolders so try not to worry too much :)

Press the windows key and type 'DISK MANAGEMENT' Click the program and start it up, if you see your external harddrive and it shows it as empty or without an allocated key (C, D, Z.. etc etc) Then you should be...

Software i used was R-Studio and EaseUS Data Recovery. Can't remember which one was better but i believe it was R-studio. That returned the most results with everything intact.

If you have a spare desktop i'd whack the hard drive into that and scan it because it'll take a couple hours or days depending how full and what size the hard drive is. It took 2 weeks to scan my whole 1TB hard rive, probably took a long time because it was full to the brim.

Give it a go!

Other software i've used is recuva data recovery. I haven't a lot of experience with the software but apparently it can help you out! Give it a go.
