Guys,

I'm stuck btw getting windows 8( 8.1 is around the corner) or windows 7. I'll be gaming and I heard windows 8 having significant fps increases over w7 in BF4 beta. I love the windows 7 OM since I've been using it a while already. Any thoughts?

Thanks gentlemen!

Windows 8 has support for DirectX 11.1 (which is responsible for the FPS boost in the BF4 beta) and 8.1 will have support for DirectX 11.2

Windows 7 has support for only DirectX 11.0

Gaming on Windows 8 is great, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

I've never used w8. I know my way around w7 no doubt,my only concern was that w8's use of directX 11.1 would make the difference in games(BF4 runs better on w8 I heard!). The reason I mentioned mantle was because of the bypass of directX altogether

It's not really known to what degree Mantle will affect performance, or to what operating systems it will be made available on, only time will tell.

You are correct though, Mantle is a low-level API where as DirectX is a high-level API.

DirectX 11.1 and 11.2 (which ships with Windows 8.1) do add some neat features and BF4 most definitely did run significantly better on Windows 8. However, it seems like much of that may have been due to a simple lack of optimization for 11.0 code paths. When the game is released in a week we'll get a good look at how it performs under Windows 7, and how Mantle performs in December.
