Hey guys. How does the voltage work when overclocking? I understand that the higher the voltage your CPU is at the less life it can have. What would be a safe voltage to have the i5 4670k chip at with a Z87 plus mobo? I don't want to fry my chip. I'm also using liquid cooling. Is there a math formula to use for the voltage when increasing the mhz? Thanks guys! Please help!

Hi. If you have a Z87 motherboard, it probably has the UEFI BiOS and the Overclocking utility that does it automatically. That is the best way togo as it will keep things safe and give you a maximum OC for what is there as far as cooling goes.

I would never recommend using something that does it automatically. There's no magic formula, just set your desired OC, raise the voltage accordingly, and stress test to make sure your system is stable. If/when it gets stable, ask yourself if you're fine with setting the voltage that it's stable at.

It's in the BiOS. On the first Page EZ screen, you just click on the 4 way Optimization button and sit back and watch. At some point, it WILL BSOD. Not to worry as that is normal and it will restart. When that happens, you have reached the limits of the OC and that is it. I got 4.6 Ghz, and when it went to 4.7, it BSOD'd so 4.6 Ghz was all I could get. This was due to the Cooling solution I am using.

How do I find out the proper voltage to use though. I've had very good luck using the new automatic programs that are pre built into the new z87 plus boards. Its not a 3rd party or anything like that.

I don't recall seeing that 4 way optimization in the BiOS screen? I do however have the 4 way optimization in the suite program on my desktop from Asus. I can check the BiOS again when I go home later this afternoon.

Thank you for this! I've been steady at 4.5ghz but I wanted to make sure what my voltage should be so I don't fry anything.

Also... say the overclock wouldn't be stable at 4.6ghz, if I would gradually increase the voltage would that make it more stable? (I know that it could effect my chip doing so, just curious)

Yeah, that's the one.

Not sure why my message didnt post...

Anyway's higher voltage = more heat = more stress...Anything after 4.5ghz is for hobby purposes imo. If you have sufficient cooling and a good chip you should be able to reach 4.6 @ 1.2v-1.25v. Otherwise yes just keep increasing the voltage until system is stable. Also run a stability test in AID64 for 10 min to see if any failures occur.

When the Optimizer is doing the OC, it is stress testing as it goes along. If you are a first time OCer and trying to do it manually, you can run into problems in a hurry and quite possibly brick something. A lot of people are using it and I have yet to hear of any negative results. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BoaAT5TkXc4&feature=player_embedded

Ok. Thank you very much. I do intense gaming. Heat hasn't been an issue with my liquid cooling yet. Ill give it a shot and monitor it

Don't go over 1.300 volts Vcore.

Hey man my i5 4670k @ 4.2ghz needs around 1.23volts im on air cooler (hyper 212evo) Max temps 78c on 1 core rest max 74c. Is it safe if i get CM h100i GTX to push past 1.23v for 4.4-4.6ghz oc???
