Trying to decide on a server for of bit of software I am working on. The server will be needed to run database queries with around 1-2MM records. I am fine with most of the other server specs, but I am curious if the reasons for going with a Xeon vs I7 if I am not needing dual processors. Do i need dual processors ? Will it speed up the searches? I will be running Server 2008 on it.

Solution
Dual processors are unlikely to increase search speed. You're looking for HDD/SSD speed instead for that.

The Xeon is the superior choice. Xeons are specifically made for high-load/high-time situations with a different TDP, different configuration, and a variation of the process technology to be used in server environments.
