Best GPU for 1440p Gaming under $800

I am buying a 1440p monitor for gaming. I have $800 for the GPU. Preferably a single GPU solution. If the R9-290X comes out under $700 with Battlefield 4...it might be too tempting. Do you guys think the GTX 780 will drop price? Any idea?

I believe it is possible that the 700 series will drop in price since it had no competition as far as new GPUs. Now that it does, it may drop minimally, but for 1440p gaming, a 770+ on the nvidia side, or 7970+ on the AMD side would do nicely for ya.
