Hi,
My desktop is an Amilo Pi3410. I need to restore it to the original factory settings. I have the three system recovery discs I made when I first got the computer. Can someone please tell me how to access the screen that lets you restore original factory settings? Also, I have read that when you are in the screen, they recommend you choose to restore from the hard drive. Is there no option to restore from discs? Why would I have been advised to make system restore discs if I was not going to use them when restoring the machine to factory settings? Any help would be most appreciated! Thanks!

When you power up the machine, is there an option in the first black screen to press a Function key for Recovery options? If not, the option isn't available to you and the only alternative to borrowing a Windows Vista DVD to reinstall then Change Product Key is to use the disk set you made.

You may have created a System Image and if you have the option at startup to select Repair your Computer or Run StartUp Repairs. If you have, reverting to that System Image will be one of the options and you'll be prompted to put each disk into the drive in turn.

If you aren't seeing that message because it's too far gone, once again, a borrowed Vista DVD will include Repair at the first screen, then select Restore from System Image.

Another option is to look in Control panel for an icon marked Recovery. That may shortcut the procedure.

Running the restore is faster than reinstalling because the Service Packs take ages to install. trust me - I'm working on one such as I write.

Thanks for that. I don't know if I can get into the recovery option screen. And I've never even heard of System Image! If not, I have a proper Windows XP disc, but not a disc for Vista. Would it be a good idea to go ahead and try installing that? I don't mind using XP instead of Vista -- either is fine. Do you think it has anything to do with BIOS? I'm just learning, so just repeating what my friend said! :)

XP will go in there nicely and will format the disk before it installs so anything you may have wanted off that disk will disappear for good. It will run faster than Vista but they are ceasing to support it next April so it may be as well to save some money and buy Windows 7 in case anything unfortunate happens to XP.
