Hi,

Firstly sorry for the the thread thats been done a million times in one way or another!

I've finally done my first OC on the 3570k and would appreciate some opinions on whether where ive landed is good or if it could be tweaked a little.

I tried a few different GHz and voltage settings and ive currently settled on 4.2GHz at 1.180v. I did a 16 min test with prime85 torture test with no errors and kept track of the temps using realtemp which maxed at 75oC (about 37-40oC when idle) but generally stayed around 70oC

Im curious, should i test for longer? could i safely lower the voltage a bit more at 4.2GHz safely in order to bring the temp down a touch more or is a more than acceptable temp?

I dont really want to go beyond 4.2GHz, i tried 4.5GHz at 1.35v and the temps were climbing to 80oc+ before i lost my cool (no pun intended) and restarted!

Can anyone advise if i can lower the volts on my current 4.2GHz setting or maybe even try the 4.5Ghz again with a lower voltage?

I realise i can experiment with the settings myself but fear is taking hold as i had a crash issue during one test. Im curious what voltage you guys would try at these levels.

Thanks :)

I don't much care for prime95 testing, it stresses the chip for sure, but not in the same way other programs do. Many a time I've gotten a machine prime95 stable and had it crash after ten minutes of gaming. Having transfers between the CPU and GPU is where it is at.

I prefer AIDA64 which really heats the chip up on all functions and the GPUs if you want, when you get it stable like that for more then twenty minutes you are pretty much good to go. If it isn't stable it will kick out and tell you rather then crashing, you can even set thermal limits.

First: are you using the stock cooler or an aftermarket cooler?
Second: Yes, you should test Prime95 for MINIMUM 12 hours
And Thirdly: Have you done any other BIOS changes? Like turning off Turbo and such?

sorry i should have mentioned that. no its a hyper 212 evo cooler.

and no i only changed the cpu clock ratio and the vcore. I initially went off a youtube vid unsing the same cpu and similar mobo but he was going for a 4.5GHz OC and mentioned that 1.35v was based on an OC at 4.8GHz so im unsure of what voltage to set. im happy with 4.2GHz so just want the best minimum voltage for that really.

12 hours prime test you say? damn that could take some serious time :)

with respect my question to you is why do people do it then? This is my first attempt really now that i have a decent rig going (can handle the likes of crysis 3 and witcher 2 on high settings so far without breaking a sweat). Just figured since overclocking is a huge topic, there would be a difference?

Thanks eximo, i tried aida64 and ran it for about 30 mins with no probs and the temps didnt go too crazy. Later i'll adjust the voltage little by little and retry to find the right spot.

Your're not going to get much out of overclocking your i5-3570k...

Example: http://www.vortez.net/articles_pages/intel_ivy_bridge_core_i5_3570k_core_i7_3770k_review,12.html

Or if you want something more relevant: http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/core_i5_3570k_review,21.html

Notice the fps gain at 4.7Ghz compared to stock settings, especially the second graph.

Performance gain in games is very limited unless it is exceptionally CPU intensive, like the ARMA series, large scale RTS games, physics games like Kerbal Space Program, Gmod.
