Hi,
I have been using an external hard drive (Protronix 250GB 2.5" External Portable Hard Drive) to store some photos/ home movies etc and have been experiencing some issues with it over the last 24 hours on my laptop at home and my PC at work. Both use Windows 7. When I plug in the hard drive the new device connected sound goes off but does not show up in My Computer naturally -- I have been able to get it to show up after changing settings to "show hidden files/drives" in Folder Options. When trying to access in My Computer an error message still pops up reading: "Please insert a disk into Removable Disk (H: )". Drivers for this disk are up to date. Red light on hard drive is solidly on and there is no beeping. Unplugging device results in normal 'device disconnected' windows sound. Hard drive was not dropped or spilled on or damaged in any physical way (as far as I can tell from the outside- haven't opened it up).

I also tried two different data recovery programs which both came up with several error messages that said either "Insert disk..." or "Path does not exist" or "Invalid drive for scan" or "No files to be scanned". I received a similar error when trying to scan for viruses.
I'm hoping there's a way to extract the data off this hard drive or to fix whatever may be interfering with either of my computers' ability to read the disk. Would hate to lose so many family photos/videos.

Any suggestions/tips would be much appreciated! Or even if anyone has a way to tell for certain whether my data is irretrievable. Thanks very much.

"Please insert a disk into Removable Disk (H: )"

I've a hunch that drive H: is not your external hard drive, it's more likely to be a built-in card reader or something else.

If so, then your external hard drive probably just needs a drive letter assigning to it manually.

Open Computer Management > Disk Management.
in the bottom-right panel find the ribbon which relates to your external drive, it will have no name or drive letter, and may be labelled "Raw".

Right-click on that and choose "Change Drive Letter & Paths"
Click "Add" and choose a letter or accept the default letter.
Click 'OK' and wait for the ribbon to update.

I would advise you that having only one hard drive for storing irreplaceable files on is not wise...

Thanks for your reply Phillip. Following your instructions, this is what I see [photo: http://tinyurl.com/p9ma6sx ]. I did try to remove H as the assigned drive letter and add another one but I have the same issues, just with another letter assigned to the drive.
