My Desktop PC won't connect to the WiFi network but my other devices connect fine.

My Windows 8 desktop will not connect to the wireless network in my flat.
My other devices (a Samsung chromebook, and a Nokia Lumia smartphone) connect to the network without any troubles.
I also have a Windows 7 laptop which has been fine connecting to the network although has been troublesome more recently.
The desktop has always connected to other networks fine and when I set up a mobile hotspot on my phone it has no trouble connecting to that.
I should also add that on one occasion I did manage to connect to the network for a brief period before being kicked off.
I do not have access to the router since it is shared with the flat downstairs and is kept there.
Anyone got any ideas?

  1. When you get your PC to scan for available connections, does it identify the router downstairs as an available connection?
If it does , is there sufficient signal strength? If the PC is on the fringes of the router's coverage it may at best intermittently connect. Phones and tablets seem better able to connect to weaker signals than a PC I have found.
If the signal is weak and you can't move the PC try attaching a dongle to a USB port using a USB lead so that you can position the dongle to get a better connection.
Has the tenant in the flat downstairs moved the router recently?
Have you been using the right password?
Have you another dongle to try in case the one you use is faulty?
  2. Thanks for your response. It does identify the network but says 'Can't connect to this network' when I try to connect and the password is definitely the correct one. You might be onto something regarding the signal strength is not great (2 bars) but this is the same throughout my flat.
  3. Did you ever get a fix for this? My desktop has full signal strength, can see the router and after the password key is entered it fails! I'm thinking that perhaps my wireless combo card is broken

I never found the source of this problem, but it just started working one time after I connected to my mobile hotspot. I appreciate this probably isn't much help but maybe worth a try.

I to am having the same problem i just moved from california to wisconsin when i was cali i had no problems connecting to the internet now since i have been here my pc won't connect i got it to work for like a week than the other day i logged on and once again my pc wont even bring up the wireless option for me to select on to, i have tried disconnecting all my wires and router and even disconnected my wifi from my pc but it still won't work, can someone please help me i'm lost without my pc...
  7. If the problem doesn't resolve itself, as a interim workaround hard wiring to router or using powerline adapters will at least (I hope) get you on the net.
  8. Has there been a solution found to this yet? My computer has been connecting fine with 4 put of 5 bars most of the time up until about 2 days ago... Now it can connect to the router but says "unidentified source" and no internet connection. Or sometimes it will say the router name with no internet connection. If anyone has a solution PLEASE help. I have 2 final research papers due Friday and I have my aviation final Tomorrow... I need to connect to the internet
  9. Ive been struggling with this problem for a while as well. Unfortunately i cannot tell you why it stopped working but i went through the same thing. At first i thought it was the wireless component in my desktop pc as the wireless adaptor (in network and sharing centre) disappeared for no reason. I went to Misco and bought a new one for about £25. This got it going again but with poor signal strength. Since then i have just stuck with the poor signal and frequent drop off. This week i decided to just replace the router as it was around 4 years old. Im glad i did. Again it cost me but it now works with a strong signal for all my devices. I went for a D Link AC1200 from Misco, cost about £90. In the desktop i have a D Link DWA-547 Wireless N.

I hope this helps some of you. I know how much of a pain the windows network stuff is!

  10. Hi guys,
just had this problem, looks like i have fixed it on my Win7. Here's how i did it:
go to Network and Sharing Center,
Change adapter settings(in the left side),
with right click disable and then enable your i guess network or something like that(for me it was Local Area Connection)

  12. Helloo
I have exactly the same problem. I have windows 8 desctop and have subscribed to talk talk. My desctop could connect to virgin network earlier . It identifies talk talk network , signal is good password correct but says - cannot connect to this network
Mobile and othwr decices do !
I havent actually answered your question but I have the same situation
  13. I had the same problem. Changed Authentication from WPA2-PSK to WPA-PSK in my Wireless Network Connection properties. No idea how it was changed.
  14. Okey, so this is what i did on windows 8.1.

Network and Sharing center -> Change adapter settings -> right click on wireless adapter -> properties -> check microsoft LLPD protocol driver, and click on configure button above -> power management -> uncheck allow this computer to turn off this device to save power -> then click ok.

Now, there could be any other reason why you keep experiencing this "unable to connect" problem, but for me solution above worked just perfect. So maybe it is worth a try after all.

    Good luck.
  15. I may have found a solution to this problem by updating my driver. Here's how i did it:
go to Network and Sharing Center,
Change adapter settings(in the left side)
right click on local or wireless connection
    go to properties
    configure in the upper right
    go to driver
    update driver
    Hope it helps!

Worked for me. Thanks a lot! :bounce:
  17. check DHCP settings
  18. I had the same issue. I bought a new dlink router and could connect my desktop and phone .. My laptop could detect the network but could not connect even though the password was correct. It could connect to other networks. I went through the router settings and forgot I had changed the wireless mode to have only the n signals instead of mixed like the old router.. And mines an old laptop so maybe the card doesn't pick up wireless n signals. If it helps check your wireless security and the wireless signal mode. Wireless n makes the signal faster I guess but not all wireless cards pick it up. You can put it to mixed wireless n and g. :) Apart from that all you can do is reinstall the drivers.
  19. Another solution is to go to
    >Control Panel
    >Network and Sharing
    >Change Adapter Settings
Your Wifi connectability may be disabled.
Right Click the option and Click Enable
Found this out by accident :D
  20. Control panel»network and Internet» network connections there select WiFi then click on diagnose this connection
  21. Please don't revive an old thread to present your problem. Just create a new thread.
  22. I had the same problem and al . I did was diagnose the problem using windows. It told me that the dhcp wasn't there an it automatically fixed it. Hope this helps.
  23. Sorry for reviving an old thread, but I found that disconnecting the ethernet cable from my pc allows me to connect to the wifi. Hopefully this helps. :)
  24. Here's how I got mine to work. First verify that your computer can connect to other wifi/hotspot/conncections. If it can, then change your adapter settings, hit configure, go to driver, and rollback driver. Should work.
  25. I am having exactly the same problem, with windows 8.1 desk top sees all available networks, and will connect to that of my neighbours, but not to ours. I have done everything that is suggested here above, but still no joy. I have even reset the router, no joy. Other computers in house and phones and tablets connect with no problem.
  26. I was having the same problem. Here is what I did to fix it.

Remember that most passwords are case sensitive.
