My Windows 8 desktop will not connect to the wireless network in my flat.
My other devices (a Samsung chromebook, and a Nokia Lumia smartphone) connect to the network without any troubles.
I also have a Windows 7 laptop which has been fine connecting to the network although has been troublesome more recently.
The desktop has always connected to other networks fine and when I set up a mobile hotspot on my phone it has no trouble connecting to that.
I should also add that on one occasion I did manage to connect to the network for a brief period before being kicked off.
I do not have access to the router since it is shared with the flat downstairs and is kept there.
Anyone got any ideas?

When you get your PC to scan for available connections, does it identify the router downstairs as an available connection?
If it does , is there sufficient signal strength? If the PC is on the fringes of the router's coverage it may at best intermittently connect. Phones and tablets seem better able to connect to weaker signals than a PC I have found.
If the signal is weak and you can't move the PC try attaching a dongle to a USB port using a USB lead so that you can position the dongle to get a better connection.
Has the tenant in the flat downstairs moved the router recently?
Have you been using the right password?
Have you another dongle to try in case the one you use is faulty?

Thanks for your response. It does identify the network but says 'Can't connect to this network' when I try to connect and the password is definitely the correct one. You might be onto something regarding the signal strength is not great (2 bars) but this is the same throughout my flat.

Did you ever get a fix for this? My desktop has full signal strength, can see the router and after the password key is entered it fails! I'm thinking that perhaps my wireless combo card is broken

I never found the source of this problem, but it just started working one time after I connected to my mobile hotspot. I appreciate this probably isn't much help but maybe worth a try.

If the problem doesn't resolve itself, as a interim workaround hard wiring to router or using powerline adapters will at least (I hope) get you on the net.

Has there been a solution found to this yet? My computer has been connecting fine with 4 put of 5 bars most of the time up until about 2 days ago... Now it can connect to the router but says "unidentified source" and no internet connection. Or sometimes it will say the router name with no internet connection. If anyone has a solution PLEASE help. I have 2 final research papers due Friday and I have my aviation final Tomorrow... I need to connect to the internet

Ive been struggling with this problem for a while as well. Unfortunately i cannot tell you why it stopped working but i went through the same thing. At first i thought it was the wireless component in my desktop pc as the wireless adaptor (in network and sharing centre) disappeared for no reason. I went to Misco and bought a new one for about £25. This got it going again but with poor signal strength. Since then i have just stuck with the poor signal and frequent drop off. This week i decided to just replace the router as it was around 4 years old. Im glad i did. Again it cost me but it now works with a strong signal for all my devices. I went for a D Link AC1200 from Misco, cost about £90. In the desktop i have a D Link DWA-547 Wireless N.

I hope this helps some of you. I know how much of a pain the windows network stuff is!

Hi guys,
just had this problem, looks like i have fixed it on my Win7. Here's how i did it:
go to Network and Sharing Center,
Change adapter settings(in the left side),
with right click disable and then enable your i guess network or something like that(for me it was Local Area Connection)
