Hey guys, thanks for taking the time to read this.

Recently I was playing Dota2 and during play, the display blacked out... after a few secs (maybe 10) the comp shut down and restarted. Couldn't find a mem dump log when I checked either.

After a couple of times, I tried hitting the windows key and alt tabbing out, this stopped the comp from crashing and restarting... provided I didn't go back into DOTA.

I investigated the heat situation on the GPU and it seems to idle about 45-50c and go no higher than 69c under load.

This has me a little stumped. Any thoughts? I'm wondering if the GPU has developed a fault or the PSU is acting up as possibilities.

Systems specs:

i5 2500k o/c to 3000
ASUS P8 Z77-V LE Mobo
XFX Radeon HD 6850
8 gigs of corsair ram.

Thanks in advance.

/Sam

Sounds like a bad PSU, what kind of unit do you have? It's poor quality that'll do it, but goods units have been known to good bad as well.

It's a generic 700 watt unit. (Comp was built by the UK company Chillblast, it has their name on the sticker)

Tbh the psu does seem to run pretty hot too.

Is there any way of isolating the problem and insuring it is the culprit? I just want to make sure I get to the root of the problem before I have to spend any cash as I'm a little strapped atm.

Thx for the help!

edit: Checked the error log:

Event ID: 41 Kernal Power

The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

The less efficient a PSU is, more power is turned into heat, my friend has a 750w unit with a 780 and it stays cool to the touch...without a PSU fan. So if you can feel yours being warm it means it's not a very efficient unit, and therefore, probably isn't a good unit at all. You usually can't be 100% sure what is causing problems but there are things that are clearly more likely than others. In this case your PSU is far more likely than your RAM to be causing these problems, because it happens at higher loads.

Replaced the PSU with a new corsair model, and it seems to have done the trick! Thanks for all the help!

Which Corsair model did you get? I'm having the same issue as you were having.

Oh I got an AX760, installed it, and my problem isn't fixed. Must be something else. Sucks so much I've been tampering with my rig since December 26th and nothing has improved.

The AX is a really good unit, it's the same as the Seasonic X Series which is the undisputed best PSU on the market right now. If it's not caused by your PSU (I'd think against it) then next your looking at your GPU being naughty.

Yeah I RMA'd my GPU Monday and was refunded by Wednesday. What is really irritating is that I reordered the 780 on Wednesday around 3ish PST and due to impatience I paid for next day delivery and it wasn't delivered today. If it isn't here by tomorrow, I'm writing Newegg a scathing email.
