My configuration is: Intel i7 2600k, Asus P8P67 M-Pro, Radeon HD 6950 Toxic 2G DDR 5, Coolermaster Silent Pro 850 PS, and two monitors

Life has been good until today. The system is about two years old. While doing basic stuff on internet and word processing the fan kicked in at 100%, after a bit this seemed weird and I noted the GPU temp was 165 C. I have cleaned it out completely and it wasn't very dusty to start with. I have cleaned and replaced the heatsink. Upon startup the fan is instantly at 100% and the temperature at 165. Other things are fine. CPU temp is 33c, motherboard is 24c. Using TechPower Up GPU core clock is 250 MHz GPu memory clock is 150 MHz and as I mentioned GPU temp is at 165 with the fan at 100% turning 5830 RPM. Any help is greatly appreciated. BTW there has been no issue with the monitor picture.

WOAH 165 degrees celsius you say? That's 329 degrees Fahrenheit, enough to melt most types of plastic and set fire to a couple of things!

Do you have a thermometer of any kind that you could perhaps measure the GPU with? An infrared thermometer would be perfect for this. If you truly believe that the card is reaching that temperature on an idle load, then just scrap it. That's dangerous. If you have a warranty still, see what you can do there.

If however, the card is totally not that hot, and you believe that the temperature is false. Then the internal thermometer could be busted and that's all. In this scenario, you may be able to use a GPU Fan application that could adjust the threshold at which the fan goes to 100% so that it acts...

In this scenario, you may be able to use a GPU Fan application that could adjust the threshold at which the fan goes to 100% so that it acts normally but still reads the wrong temp on the screen.

All in all, if it's really that temp, then it's warranty time or time for a new one. If it's not that temp, then you could run a fan software and get it to calm down, but there's no permanent fix for this that I know of.

Ok, I just rebooted and the TriXX Sapphire utility is saying that it is running at minus 165c. My dumb error but also a stupid number as I would be frozen to death by now. The fan just blasts along at 100%. If the picture wasn't fine I would think the card is toast. Utilities to adjust fan speed are totally ineffective.

Absolutely. I'm just confused as the readings and behavior of it doesn't make sense to me. I'm not even clear what the issue is other than a fan gone nuts and seemingly divergent temp readings.

I'm thinking of shutting down fans and systems one by one and doing a repaste of the heatsink to try and isolate the problem. Thoughts?

Many thanks for all replies.

Yes, that method is for the best. If it doesn't work though, you know what to do.
