Dell optiplex 745 (desktop version) power supply upgrade option

Solution
I have installed standard ATX PSUs into similar Dells, including an Optiplex 745 MT. While it could be mounted, it left a gap around the PSU because of the difference in sizes between the Dell PSU and the standard PSU.

I used good old fashion duct tape to cover the gap. The pin-out for the connectors was not an issue (older Dells certainly have this limitation though).

I'm trying to figure this out, I also found nother corsair psu with a 20+4 pin connecter, but I'm not undersyanding thos whole proprietary issue

I def do need a psu upgrade as I'm running an his 6670 gddr5 1gb card , yes it actually works, had to mod my optiplex a bit to get it to fit....shaved off some of the heatsink cover so now it fits perfect....I'm also modding the optiplex cover , there is a spot right above the graphics card and area between psu where you can actually mount a 80mm case fan to cool down the gpu ( will be drilling holes into.the case this week) fyi the case fan is also usb powered which is awesome and very much needed as the optiplex 745 sucks when it comes to airflow if anyone is curious about my temps, my gpu goes up to about 60-70c during gaming and 47-48c during idle

I just gave someone your solution and someone on this forum blasted me and said you cannot fit an atx psu in 745 desktop... looks like the proprietary psu is larger than the atx to me from this thread.....

This is a nearly 2 year old thread. Instead on commenting on it, a new thread is more appropriate.

As stated in the thread, the Dell PSU is larger (in physical size), but an ATX PSU can be used. A gap at the PSU opening will be present that can simply be sealed with tape (plastic, other material) or left open.

This is only an aesthetics issue, not an electrical issue (like with older proprietary wired Dell PSUs).
