Hey TH,

Usually when I plug this external HDD into a computer I am prompted with ability the to access the files,

I plug it in now and the light stays on, and that's about it

The drive can be seen in Disk Management and Device Manager however the capacity varies from 2TB to 0mb (on WDD diagnostics), no drive letter, can't attach one, tried Recuva but can't reach the drive

I'm considering alternative routes to retrieve the data (500gb) from the HDD, Is there a manual way that would work?

Like purchasing an external case and attaching the External Seagate HDD to it

Or

Professional Data Recovery Services, which is quite a stretch considering I'm not sure if it can pick up all the files (txts, mp3s, and the sort)

That is...if the data is still intact on the drive...is the only way to know this, is to send it to a Data Recovery Specialist?

Can I use programs such as Spinrite or does it overwrite on the hDD?

Solution
Getting a third-party external enclosure is the best way to proceed, as it's possible that only the small PCB in the existing enclosure has failed, thereby affecting communication with the host computer.

However, extracting the drive from existing enclosure may prove a challenge as they are usually "screw-less" cases, and even if you do manage to extract the drive, it may have a proprietary connector.

Hi,

I'm having the exact same problems with my WD 500gb hard drive. Where you able to find a solution to getting your data back? or did you have to go see a data recovery specialist?

eoballe, please do not post "me too" messages on someone else's thread, no matter how similar your problem sounds. It just causes confusion when suggesting things to try. Start your own thread, don't "butt in" on someone else's.
