I've taken the plunge and bought a Samsung 840 EVO 250Gb SSD. I now need to install into my desktop PC. My Hard Drive is partitioned into 501Gb (C) and 429GB (G). I've moved as much as I can from C to G and now have 271Gb freeon C drive.
My own thoughts on this which may have you screaming at the idea is to connect the SSD (USB to SATA) and migrate the C drive using Samsung Migration software. I then thought I could install the SSD enter BIOS and change boot options so that the PC boots from the SSD. I really am getting a bit lost now.
I am wondering if I can then reformat C drive or even do away with the partition altogether?
Can anyone tell me if I am working along the right lines

Migrating from a HDD to a SSD is a good choice.... firstly.
Secondly, it is advisable to do a fresh install on the SSD without any partitioning.
Do not try to migrate or clone the HDD onto the SSD..... complications later will remain unsolvable till you don't do a fresh install.
And you will really see the OS loading time speed up only if you do a fresh install.... otherwise the difference is going to be very very negligible.

Now, for you earlier HDD, take all the data that you need from it, and format the partition.
To be able to merge both older partitions you'll either need a new or free 1tb hdd to make a backup or then you'll need some software which will merge the partitions without you loosing the data on the second partition of the old HDD, like partition magic or something on those lines.

Thanks for the swift response. Can I do a fresh install from the Windows 8 Repair Disk? I don't have the original as it came preloaded.

Thanks again alyoshka I can contact the guys who did the original build.
What I really need is an A to Z of the whole procedure but thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

All you need to do is
1.Remove all HDDs from the rig.
2. Put the SSD in into the Rig connect it to the Mobo.
3. Boot up, get into the BIOS, set DVD/CD Drive as 1st boot dev.
4. Insert OS disc into ODD, boot up rig from ODD, Install OS.
5. Let everything get configured after a few boots
6. Insert the old HDD when the rig is off, connect it to another Port on the Mobo.
7. Boot into BIOS. Set SSD as 1 and only boot up Device.
8. Boot up rig in safe mode
9. Change old HDD partition Names/Variables to d,e,f,g,x anything you like other than C
10. You'r good to boot into normal mode and start installing your favorite programs and copying the essential data or importing it to the SSD from the old HDD now with new Drive letters.

I've just had another thought on this which may or may not be pertinent. I have my Windows 8 Pro product key so can I upgrade to Windows 8.1 as a clean install directly to the SSD? I'm afraid that this is becoming complicated.
I really don't know what I've been thinking about. When my PC was built it ran Windows 7 so the guys who built it won't have the Windows 8 install disk. In fact I upgraded via the Microsoft site so did the Windows 8 install without disks. Does this make a difference or am I confusing you as much as myself?

Once again my thanks. You're now speaking a language I can understand, instructions from 1 to 10.
I'll give it a go as soon as I've sorted out the clean install issue. Cheers!

I would clone c; over to the ssc first and follow the win8 ssd tweeks guides
http://thessdreview.com/ssd-guides/optimization-guides/the-ssd-optimization-guide-ultimate-windows-8-edition/

f theres any remaining stuff you want to put on the hdd you'll probably need to uninstall it and reinstall it on the hdd

It was all going too well. I'm beginning to wish I'd left the rig alone. Firstly I can't activate windows and can't even access the list of countrys to get a phone number. Secondly I have absolutely no idea how to migrate my old programs so no mail apart from internet and no access to music software like Reaper. I did install Steam and my new 250Gb SSD is down to 63Gb! Can you lend me your expertise once again please? Thank you.

Thanks for the advice but I decided to go with the clean install. I don't suppose you know anything about migrating programs from the HDD to the SSD?

I've had all day to think about this and have finally got my head around it. I moved my Steam folder back to the HDD and created masses of space. I now understand that even though I need to re-install some programmes I can choose to have them installed on the HDD whilst running them from the SSD. I've tried out a few really cumbersome progs and the speed is blindingly fast compared to before. Thanks again for your help and suggestions.
