Next Gen Consoles games better than Computer next gen?

I have a feeling that next gen console games will be favored and look better even though the hardware on a computer can far surpass what consoles contain... I've had this feeling for a while, even though I ditched my ps4 preorder. The days of overpaying for games (non-AAA) are over for me, but as I was doing it I was wondering... Will BF4 or COD or any of those games gaining so much coverage look better on consoles, just because of the console push? This obviously pertains to now, as I know a few years down the road it won't be close, like it is now with the ps3 and 360 against computers, but as many have said, top-end PCs are already way ahead of next gen consoles, so what gives?

For anyone who doesn't want to read it, or cant, basically Need for Speed rivals looks superior on PS4. The textures pop more and the game just looks nicer than it does on PC.

It's no surprise that the new consoles will be good in performance.

The article you linked doesn't seem like a really good tech site. Also, some games are poorly optimized for the PC anyways so one game can't be an example. Also, Generally the PC version requires more optimizations and that could not be the final product.

Since New Consoles and PC's will be using the same architecture, Expect better ports and more optimization for the PC than ever before.

Performance wise, If you have a 7850 or better, you have no reason to care about the next gen... The graphics don't really matter, I just care about having everything I want in one place, playing with a mouse and keyboard, and of course, downloading games for very low prices.

And BF4 has a new Mantle API. Check it out.

pc's r so much better than consols. they r better looking ,easier to play',more fun to play and r cheaper. a R350 or $35 on playstation or xbox is R100 OR $10 on pc. they r so much better now and will continue to be for years to come

First, I will preface my opinion with the following admission: I have been a video game junkie for decades; since the late 70s/early 80s. I have seen the progression from (really) old-school to modern PC and console gaming systems. The list of consoles I haven't owned (Colecovision, NEC, Wii U) is far shorter than the list of consoles I have owned (all the rest).

I've compared the console previews to my system with a 3930K and 2 GTX 780s on a 120Hz monitor. From that standpoint, my PC easily looks better. BF4 is definitely better on my PC. From a game pricing standpoint, I was able to pick up Batman Arkham City and Arkham Asylum for a total of $10 on Steam over a year ago. If you don't buy something when it first comes out, you get great deals for games on a PC after a few months. I get game bundles off of Amazon with a few AAA titles in each for under $20 every couple of months.

If I had less than $1k to spend on a gaming PC, I'd definitely consider a console as a viable option.

Because I am a junkie, I have an Xbox One on pre-order "for the family" to replace my 360 in the living room more for the entirety of the functionality more so than just for gaming (since once BF4 comes out, I'll be chained to my PC). I'm not so sure about the PS4 because there doesn't seem to be much more to it over the PS3 with the exception of a graphics upgrade (still not better than my PC), but I'll probably own one at some point as well just out of curiosity.

i live in south africa and the currency is Rands but alot of you members from toms hardware r in america or the UK so thats why i included dollars and i wouldof included euros but im not really clued up with euros

I actually think that the "next gen" console releases coming up will also trigger a flurry of "next gen" pc games.

Obviously pc doesn't have discrete "generations" like consoles do. But since the architecture of the new consoles is more closely related to pc's, I think developers will have have better ports, than what has historcally been released. Or even better, some devs may develop games for pc in parallel to console development (rather than developing for consoles and then simply porting over a low quality version) - such as From Software is doing with Dark Souls 2. The result could be a generational leap in pc games.

But overall, high end pc's will always be more capable than the static hardware of consoles. It's both silly and naive to think otherwise. It's a matter of what devs are going to design their games for, and how well their games will scale between pc's and consoles

interesting responses. I do agree. I have a 7950 powercolor but am watching what is happening with NVIDIA and AMD lately. The AMD 290x is a tempting card.

I am ready to see if the next gen console do indeed give a further boost to computer gaming.

I expect them to boost gaming because the game publishing houses will be working with more (eight cores on Xbox One and PS4) and slower cores (both <2GHz) on the consoles. Distributing the work across cores will become increasingly important. Extrapolate this knowledge to faster cores on a PC and we're going to see some amazing things happening.

One thing to consider is that future games released for the PS4 will always run on the PS4, the hardware will more or less not change. However, new hardware always come out for PCs. This means that future games will steadily become more demand.

If you buy a PS4 and PC in 2014, you will find that in 2019 any you buy for the PS4 will run just fine on the PS4. Playing a 2019 game on a 2014 PC however will be a different story. That because new hardware allows developers to push the performance envelop further making games look better, but also requires better hardware.

I'm not a fan of consoles, so I will never buy one.... Although I do like the boxing game for the Wiii... I guess it's both fun and provides a decent workout.

The way the Xbox One makes up for the RAM speed discrepancy is through the use of a tremendous amount of cache and a slightly faster processor. Cache is much faster than any RAM, but that goes without saying (so why did I say it?!).

They will both be comparable from a graphics standpoint, but the Xbox One seems to have a lot more going on outside of a mere graphics upgrade. I'll probably own a PS4 at some point primarily to play a few exclusives, but outside of a graphics update, it's hard for me to get jazzed up about anything the PS4 has to offer.

Seems a little contradictory, but obvious you have a preference for PS4.

Also, I'm not so sure it's the size of the console that matters. It's more so how you use it. Also, what does a parallelogram have to offer over a rectangle? Seems like a less efficient use of space on a given surface (unless a give room or entertainment center also has a parallelogram shape to it (I haven't seen one yet).

I haven't seen any concrete specs regarding frame rates for the new consoles, but expect both consoles to run 30fps.

Also, many things that are cheaper sell at higher volumes. This just makes sense unless the product is complete junk. More people have less money while less people have more money to spend on gaming systems. If this weren't the case, we'd all be running i7 triple-SLI Titan systems.

PS4 will definitely not look better than my PC with two 780s. And from the looks of any previews I've seen, on par with an Xbox One at best, yet has far less to offer from an overall entertainment standpoint than an Xbox One. There just doesn't seem to be much to a PS4 other than a graphics upgrade. The PS Eye is not functional with games, costs $60 extra and only offers video chat functionality.

I'll probably own one at some point, but from the looks of things, it definitely doesn't look better than anything on my PC.

What's funny is in the article you've cited even the source of the article's information is questioned by the author himself. That's funny. The author claims a bunch of information in the first few paragraphs and then says 'oh! by the way!' the source of my information may or may not be trustworthy. The beginning of one article you list above states the Xbox One can't do 1080p then goes on to say Forza 5 is confirmed 1080p based on information from an IGN article and that's just one example of the conflicting info on 'Extremetech'. That makes me want to avoid 'Extremetech' articles altogether since they seem 'Extreme'ly unreliable.

To me, PlayStation fans seem to go out of their way to discredit every other system while not providing any compelling reason to buy a PS4 other the graphics being better than on a PS3 and they can use their browser on the PS4 to browse the internet for free (I'm not entirely sure whether you can or can't browse the web without a Live account anyhow - you can get game updates without a Live account through an internet connection?). Not too exciting to me.

There's just no concrete proof that one system's graphics are better than the others. Yeah PS4 uses DDR5, but the Xbox One has way more on chip memory (cache). We'll see how it shakes out.

But just as on the Xbox One, the PS4 should have some pretty cool exclusive games.

It's really great that they're both trying so hard to compete for our business. It should make gaming on every platform better.
