Whats your thoughts on Nvidia "G-Sync" that was just released at the Nvidia conference?
Do you think its actually useful?
Worth the cost?

I'm an AMD GPU fanboy and I've never actually came across horrible tearing or video lagg or I just haven't noticed it. Maybe with Mantle support coming to games it will reduce it.

Huh, I mean, try playing Counter Strike with and without Vsync, it's night and day. Stuttering won't really happen on single card configs, but tearing does.

For us that actually do notice it, this is huge.

Yes it is huge! But a G-Sync monitor will be on the higher price range. Mantle is built into AMD GPU's and is a fix for FPS/tearing G-sync is just a work around. (These are just my opinions)

G-sync makes a lot more sense. This is similar to v-sync, but instead of the display controlling when frames are delivered, the GPU sets the pace. This means that you can prevent tearing without causing latency, and having FPS below your monitors max refresh rate no longer results in stuttering.

maybe i got it wrong but did you suggest that Mantle will be able to fix tearing issue on the monitors when v-sync being turn off?

As of right now no one really knows what Mantle will be able to do, Now that Nvidia has the G-Sync AMD with work with developers to get Mantle to do something similar. Since the next gen consoles are all using AMD Mantle will be the "Hidden guns" for AMD over Nvidia.

the tech seems nice but i think nvidia need to open the tech to other gpu vendor if they hope this tech to go mainstream. if it go mainstream it might benefit both gamer and game developer.

Mark Rein was standing next to me during a demonstration and was clearly excited about the potential for developers to increase visual quality without worrying about hitting a 60 FPS cap 100% of the time.

They will keep it too themselves, It causes more competition. Now that AMD has the console side Nvidia is trying to grab the PC side.

Mantle is an API to allow for closer to the hardware calls on GCN cards. It does not magically make new technologies. AMD may add features to support monitors like this, but they also have to modify current monitors or at least be compatible with new G-sync monitors.

Mantle is code.
G-sync is code and hardware.

no official statement from sony yet but they might do the same as MS

also about G-Sync. from what i can understand the custom chip inside the monitor was made so the monitor can act together with the gpu. Mantle alone won't solve that because amd gpu still acting independently with monitor. to have something similar amd needs to create their own version of G-Sync and make deals with the panel maker so to put their custom chip on it

I have to say it is interesting, but since its coming from nVidia, I know they'll keep it a closed proprietary thing for them only.

Hope they prove me wrong, but I hate closed standards when they could benefit all of us by making them open (it's a different business strategy, that's all).

Cheers!
