SSD space magically decreasing

I have an 256GB Samsung pro SSD. When I select all of the siles on the drive, it totlas to 24.3GB of disk space used, yet my SSD says that there is 60GB used (I really have very little on the drive besides my windows installation). Where has all this space gone, and taken up by what?

That's probably System Restore. It takes up to 20% of the hard drive, saving old configurations and settings in case of problems. With a 256GB drive, you should have plenty of space to keep it on. I do, and my main drive is a Vertex 4 256GB. It won't use more than 52GB of space, and you can tune it down to only use as little as 2% if you want.

There's also the possibility that old patches are taking up space, too. Those you might want to clean up. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2852386

Clean up, when used on the system files, didn't remove more than 343MB. I believe it is my folder view settings, and I was just not selecting everything. Also, system restore may be taking up more space than I realized.

Even when I can see all the folder, including the hidden ones, the total is still only 24.5GB. Where is the other 30GB or so lurking?

The system restore was already configured to use a max of 10GB and is using about 9.3GB right now.

That worked really well. Freed up a fair amount of space and explained what was using it (never used hibernate anyway). There is till an unexplained 20GB missing though.

It's also possible to have temp files that show up as 0k in file size, but take up a large amount of space due to cluster size. Try clearing your temp folder and setting it to a different drive or a RAMdrive, then reboot. That would also save your SSD from unnecessary writes.

I have three SSDs set up like this:
256G Vertex4 OS/ Office
128G Vertex4 Games
256G Agility4 Temp/Swap/VM storage

I had this problem if this hasn't been suggested but right click on computer and go to properties then go to system protection then configure and click delete at the bottom then turn off system protection. ONLY DO THIS IF YOU NEVER USE RESTORE POINTS.
