which sound card should I buy?

Hi
I have AsRock Fatal1ty professional motherboard, which has an on-board audio called Realtek ALC898 (I think) and also I use a cheap Sony mdr-nc8 headsets for gaming.
should I buy a sound card or there won't be any difference with my current headsets?
also if I were to buy a better headsets, will the on-board audio be enough or not?
again, for gaming.

More about sound card buy
  1. ALC 898 is an excellent on-board CODEC. Even if you bought some of the best high end soundcards you would only get something equal, maybe marginally better. Not worth it IMO.

Then I'm better off spending the money on a better headsets, right?
  3. Your audio is only as good as it's weakest link. For a cheap pair of headphones like the ones you use, on board audio is more than adequate; a sound card will not make poor headphones sound better.

On board audio is typically poor compared to a sound card, although on board is a lot better then it used to be. ALC892 is mediocre anyway too.

    What is your budget?

my budget is around 80~100$, I will spend it on a headset OR on a sound card, but since you said that a better sound card won't make a poor headset sound better, I'm guessing I should spend it on a headset, maybe some $100 Razer headset?

Razer is horrible, but if you want something that will just be out of the box simple and look "nerdy," then by all means go Razer.

I recommend you look at these pages for good headphone choices; it will help you get a general idea of what to get in your price range.

Black Friday is coming up so you can probably get some good deals on headphones.
