I have an area 51 with an MS-7543 motherboard. It has fakeRAID but I would like to install a raid controller to go with 3xSSD 120GB disks I have. I am going to install Ubuntu on this system.

I was considering this RAID card https://www.adaptec.com/en-gb/products/controllers/hardware/sas/performance/sas-5445/

I have a graphic card taking up one PCI Express x16 Slot, I appear to have two of these slots free.

I would like to ask you guys if this is going to be compatible?

Yeah I read a comment that the card can get hot. I guess I missed or ignored that sata stat. I went on the Adaptec site becasue it's the only brand I had come accross in the past. I haven't found a sata 3 card on there yet. Are there any other cards you would recommend?

I was thinking of using raid 5 as I need some redundancy but could also look at raid 10 with more disks if I could find a better value card.

No, nothing close to that, I'd be happy with 240GB of useable space. So for raid 10 there is some Startech cards, like this one.

I could go to 6x120GB disks and get 360GB of useable space. I am I right in thinking this wouldn't need cooling either? $500 on a card isn't going to feel particularly good.

Seems like a no brainer
