Hi, I recently dropped my laptop while it was running. The corner cracked but it worked fine after that until my boyfriend turned it off last night. This morning when I tried to start it up, it hung on the windows startup page without the animated logo. I tried to start it up in safe mode after, but it didn't work either. I'm currently trying chkdsk /r after looking at threads with similar problems, however I read somewhere that this issue could be the cause of a physically damaged hard drive and I was wondering if that could be my issue here. I'm curious though as to why it worked fine right up until turning it back on. Any thoughts, input or possible solutions would be really helpful. I don't know a whole lot about computers myself.
If the drive suffered damage when it was dropped (in an HDD case, where the read/write head comes in contact with the disc), it may have affected the boot information written on the disc, but this would not show up until the PC was turned off and tried to restart, at which point the corrupted information would stop the PC booting. Checkdisk is your best bet to find out if the drive is physically damaged. Given you say you do not know a lot about PCs, if the drive is damaged, you would need to get it replaced, and unless you know someone who can do this for you, it may not be cheap.
