I have a storage drive on my custom built computer that seems to enjoy disconnecting itself from the system, crashing windows in the process. It is a Samsung Spinpoint F3 1tb drive, and I'm running Windows 7.

When I boot normally, the drive shows up in My Computer, giving info on space available and so on. When I try to explore it, right click or otherwise interface with it, the system locks down and windows explorer crashes. This hdd seems to lag the whole system. I can't shut down, open any programs or do anything because the moment I touch this hard drive, windows is suddenly slow, glitchy and eventually just crashes. Additionally, looking at the start menu, all programs housed on my storage drive show up as white file icons, and none of the programs load if you try to execute them.

If I boot into safe mode, the hard drive is available and works fast. I assumed this meant there was simply a driver issue, but when I tried to run a disk check, I got an "access denied message". So, I tried to retake ownership of the hard drive, and again, I got an "access denied, disk unavailable" message, and the drive, even in safe mode had become unavailable.

Weird huh? The drive passes all smart tests, and I've put it on a new sata cable in a new port. All my other sata devices seem to work fine. It had a faulty sata cable at one point, which I replaced. Could that have damaged the drive's connection in some way?

Any help?
I'm running a 790x chipset.
