Hi,

In the last few days, I experienced PC freeze with video artifacts, at random. It will freeze while surfing web, watching youtube, playing some games (not high-end games), or simply by wandering around (i.e. it froze up when I clicked properties on a folder).
I have a 8800GT card, since 2008. The PSU is 550W since 2010. Everything worked perfect since like 2 days ago. Now I'm praying it won't freeze before I finish writing this.

I installed FurMark. Any test I run, the PC will freeze in less than 10 seconds. The GPU temperature goes over 70deg C, but normally the temperature is around 64 (only by wandering around windows, no web, no youtube, no games, no movies).

Here is a file snapshot of GPU-Z sensor log, right before a freeze:
Date , GPU Core Clock [MHz] , GPU Memory Clock [MHz] , GPU Shader Clock [MHz] , GPU Temperature [°C] , PCB Temperature [°C] , GPU Temperature [°C] , PCB Temperature [°C] , Fan Speed (%) [%] , Fan Speed (RPM) [RPM] , Memory Used [MB] , GPU Load [%] , Memory Controller Load [%] , Video Engine Load [%] , VDDC [V] ,

As you can see, almost no change. The temperature was 64deg C.
I opened the PC case and cleaned video card of any dust, cleaned the cooler also.
In my opinion, either the video card or the PSU are faulty. The question is... how to investigate which one? I don't have any other card or PSU to replace and test, and I can't get either one in the next few days, just for a test. Any idea on how to proceed, I would be grateful for!

What tells you the GPU RAM is faulty?

I bought an 8800gt back in 2007. Great card lasted me until about 2011 and then I started getting artifacts same as you. It sounds like your card is on the way out. I found that going over the PCB with a heat gun for 2-3 minutes will help reflow the solder around the GPU and may extend the life of your card for a couple months.

If you do decide to reflow the gpu, take off the heatsink first, clean off the GPU with rubbing alcohol and heat up around the GPU in a circular motion. I can't remember what temps I used but i'm sure there are dozens of youtube videos describing the process.

I also found that underclocking the card helped prevent artifacts and freezing. GL!

Guys, first off, I'm investigating what the problem is, then see how to fix it.
Meanwhile, I noticed that if I increase RPM for GPU fan, everything works perfect again (except the noise). That makes me believe video card is faulty.

We already knew that .

Its possible the heatsink is a bit loose , but even repairing that wont help for long . The graphics chip is failing . Replace it

The artefacts are a sign of GPU Memory failure. The GPU cant read off the memory and artefacts appear as a result. This can occur when a PSU is putting out unsteady voltage resulting in the memory on the GPU failing. As a result it normally pays to replace both.

Artefacting can be caused by the progressive failure of the gpu its self . Thats more likely in this case because increasing direct cooling of the GPU is having a positive effect .....but either way its only a matter of time before the card fails completely
