Hi everyone, I am new here, glad to be part of you. My desktop has broken down recently and I am considering to get one soon. It is really just for my husband and kids, mainly for games and TV. There are two types desktop on sale at argos.ie , both asus brand, but two different CPU, Amd a8 and intel i5, not much information given don't know which generation of this intel i5, would you please advise me which one is better to get? And also will easy to upgrade go the future if needed. Many thanks, Hannah

Well,if you intend to do a lot of gaming,AMD is the one.I mean the AMD has powerful IGFX with it's APU,the one which you just said, but you'll have to compromise a little CPU power. But the i5,it's just raw power, pure CPU power, which is much better compared to AMD APU's CPU power, though intel laggs behind when it comes to graphics performance. And keep in mind the price too.
So,get the one based on your needs. Are you upto gaming, videos, editing and such stuff? AMD will help better. But if your plan is some CPU intense tasks and multitasking,go for the i5.
I spoke about gaming, with a thought that you won't be buying a discrete GPU.If you're gonna get a GPU,never AMD...! Intel is the one for you, damn sure...! AMD will be nowhere near intel if that be the case. So be wise and make the right call.

Both are good to go but there are some positive points in both CPU's. if you want a pc that solely let your kids play video games and lil bit of other tasks like email checking web surfing and you have a tight budget but still want a good performance then go for AMD because they are relatively cheaper but good in performance. It will let you save some money that you can spend on other things.
But if you want a computer that has a better future proof, that is extremely good in gaming performance, that can do lot of rendering and multitasking for you then go for INTEL i5. Will be costly but you get a lot satisfaction after using it.

So it's totally up to you. Any more help please don't hesitate to ask :)

Lost my long post :( lol
Had a look the amd is £499 and the intel is the £449 one? If so for what want the amd will win hands down! The 7560 igpu is excellent and far outweighs the extra power of the i5 cpu, I know because I have one and sometimes I cant believe the games even run on an igp never mind run so well, anything involving graphics even web browsing or flick through family photos is a joy!

Thank you very much, actually the amd A8 I am looking at is slightly expensive than I5, they are all in my budget with good price. I will go to the site and copy information down and would you please take a look? Hannah

Thank you for taking a look on the website, I think it is the one you talking about. Are you also saying amd is the one to go with? I am not a computer mind, really appreciate all your comments. Hannah

Intels igp is junk, this is a family buying a prefab, they arent going to oc and enter benchmark competitions or buy £££s worth of graphics gpu, the amd 7560 graphics and extra tb of hd will be much more use to them than saving 10mins encoding a 2hr video.
They'll ***SEE*** much more benefit from the hd 7560 gpu in the a8 machine than the super pi score (or whatever) of the i5.

Nope. 4th gen Intel integrated graphics really are a all in one solution. If, IF, they are using the computer only for web browsing, then neither will make much a difference. IF, that is the case, go with the cheaper of the two builds.

Its a family computer used for kids gaming and tv, it clearly states that in the op, ie intel igp is this case is junk.

intel = Expensive a bit, multitasking, Future proof, rendering stuff, not very good for gaming(as compared to amd) though it's good if you spend some money on a Video card and we all know Game performance depends upon Graphics Card.

AMD = Great gaming performance, cheaper a bit, not so good(i wouldn't recommend) for Rendering, APU's are very good in gaming so if you're not planing to play AAA title on max then it's fine no need to get worry for Graphics card.
Choice is yours :)

Not sure what you mean by anywhere to look, but if you mean retailers, newegg.com, tigerdirect.com, and pcpartpicker.com are the sites I use to order my PC components :D

I would love to buy a new generation i5 i7 for less than 700 europe if possible as it will be able to be used longer before the next upgrade. Do you have any where good to recommend?

I don't mind to add a good dedicated graphic card as my husband also want to play big games. They are the right catalog no. Hannah

You will be paying in excess of £1000 for a gaming computer from a catalogue.

For reference, the intel's HD 4000 is comparable to the dedicated AMD HD 6450. Which is quite awful. The A8's IGPU will be quite a bit better. Won't be playing games at med/high settings, but the computer will actually be able to play games without causing hair-pulling frustration at the low framerates.

You'll need something like a dedicated AMD Radeon HD 7850 to see the difference between the AMD and Intel processors in question. But that would cost way too much for a pre-built PC.

In that case then the i5 would be the better buy!! :)
An even better buy but slightly more complicated than popping down to argos :) would be to look at places like scan.co.uk for a prefab or try find someone local who'll build a computer rather than the argos one eg the power supply could be weak, the motherboard could be weak and both these things might not suit a high/highish end graphics card. I'll try find some links, you're in the uk obviously? You get alot more for your money but not as 'handy' with warranty, though warranty still exists.

Believe it or not, building a computer can actually be much cheaper than ordering one! Now, if you want to learn how to, I recommend watching a guide, like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPIXAtNGGCw
For building your computer, this would be a good example of a cheap, starter computer!
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1QpLW
Of course, it would depend on certain things you need, like a CD drive, more or less space on your computer, and how much web browsing/game playing (varies from game to game) to determine the best computer for you!
