I have 2 NICs on my motherboard. I currently use just one. I wanted to connect a Drobo FS to my computer, but do not want it to be available on our network or install a second router. Since the Drobo only has 1 Ethernet port and no USB, I thought about connecting it directly to my PC using the available NIC. The thought is, Cat6 connected directly between 2nd NIC and Drobo. No router or switch. Static IPs set to different subnet from NIC 1. No gateway configured. So NIC 1 would have the normal 192.168.1.100, subnet, gatway...etc and connected to router. NIC2 would be 10.0.0.1 and Drobo 10.0.0.2, both with subnet, with no gateway. Will this configuration work?

Yes, it will work and it's official name will be an ad hoc network so if you Google that you wlil find your thinking is bang on target.
