Hey folks, new member. I'm an amateur builder (5 rigs for friends and family) and local tech support. The TH forums solve most anything I can't work out. Today though, my in-progress build is having issues. Working on a "Chunky HTPC" for the wife and I. Goals: Blu-ray and Steam to replace silly new-gen consoles.

Scenario: Testing out new Mobo, CPU, PSU, case. Using spare (tested good) GPU, Ram, HDD. Bench testing new parts before I cut UPC's for rebates or warranty periods encroach. Booted to OS first try. Stock BIOS settings Check CPU-Z and HWMonitor for clocks and temps.

Problem: Stress test with Prime95 (balanced test), fails after 15mins with "Rounding 0.5" error. Fails OCCT after 93mins. Currently running P95 Small FFT at 60mins. Temps reading Min=12C, Max= 32C. Bios reads about +10C but still safe range. I've never had a failed CPU or Mobo before. I always shoot for +12h on tests.

Question: Are these fails enough to say I've got a defective part? If so, how to troubleshoot which one?

Parts List:
Win7-64bit
Case: Rosewill Ranger-M
Mobo: GA-78LMT-USB3
CPU: AMD FX-6300
HSF: CM Gemini II
Ram: Patriot G2 8gbx1 running 1333mhz (temporary,borrowed from a friend's FX rig)
GPU: Asus HD4850 (temporary,HD7850,7870,7950 soon)
HDD: WD Green 1Tb WD10EARX
PSU: Corsair HX850
Coming Soon: small SSD for OS boot. SteamOS perhaps?

We're up to 3:45 on the small FFT test and haven't broken "30C" in a while. AMD needs to fix it's temp monitoring on these things...
It's the v5. Was expecting to scavenge my primary rig's PIIx4 945 to update Bios but lucked out.
Since the borrowed ram is from a comrade's build, I'll borrow the other stick and try other slots and dual channel.
Is a Hiren Boot Disk any different from a regular boot tool like PenDriveLinux? Checked earlier and the FA version Award bios doesn't have built in Memtest. Bummer.

Well balls. There's a first for everything. Got Hiren's loaded on a USB. Let the Small FFP hit the 6hr mark. Power down, let it rest for a bit...
Press power button. POP, smoke from under the NB heatsink! Shut off psu and pray nothing else is injured. Guess I'm calling newegg support in the morning.

Now to a different topic. I've NEVER had a mobo try to catch fire. Any risk the cpu or other parts are damaged? Any way to tell since my primary pc is AM2+/AM3. It's an MSI 785gt-e46.

Quoth every mechanic ever, "Well there's your problem right there!"
I was wrong at first glance, it was the mosfet's that torched. Newegg can't RMA due to physical damage. GB RMA process pending.

I'm not the most knowledgeable on circuitry but would mosfet burning mean my cpu is drawing too much power? The 6300 is 95w and the board is rated for 125w.
