Hey, guys!

I updated my Haswell 4770K with Asus Z87 Deluxe motherboard computer last night. It was working fine- no visible issues. Been working all day today, and then...

I wanted to restart it because Yahoo Toolbar was not showing up and Yahoo mail was missing check boxes when you want to delete mail- minor thing.

When I restarted, Windows loaded with logo, up to the image that comes right before we asked to put the password in. I wanted to click on the image to proceed to log in screen but mouse would not respond. The mouse was connected to KVM switch between 2 computers. I have lost connection before, so I did not think anything of it. I went on another computer and that one also did not have mouse. I thought- KVM switch froze (it happens once in a while). But keyboard was still working. After trying another mouse, somehow I got that other computer (Windows 8, not updated to 8.1) to restart and now it works fine from the KVM switch.

The first computer with Haswell and Windows 8.1 is not responding to anything. I have now wired keyboard and mouse connected to it directly. If I enter the BIOS, I see mouse working. Soon as I exit and let it load Windows, it goes up to the image before log in screen and never progresses to log in. I did restarted it by shutting down power button, but still- usually that would not make it unusable. What to do now? Thank you.

I noted that all USB ports appear dead. Like if I put in USB stick, there supposed to be light indicator, but no light coming on. I look in BIOS- there is no setting for USB utilization as I have on my Z77 board where it asks if I want full utilization of USB ports (all usb available during the boot)or partial (only keyboard and mouse). On this computer's BIOS it has "Enable" or "Disable" for all USB ports and all set to "Enable". Something happens to it when Windows loads. My KVM blinking as if computer was off, but Monitors work. Something must be wrong with USB management.

No progress so far. Need to be able to boot in Safe mode. Pressing F8 offers me "Boot Priority". I can select which drive to boot from, such as DVD or SSD and few generic. There are no boot options such as "Safe Mode" or "Safe mode with Network'. Any other way to get in to Safe mode? Thank you.

Spoke with Asus rep and superviser. They all say- it is USB driver and that there is no way to get it in without entering Safe mode. And that after I Tap 8, enter boot priority menu, select SSD in boot priority, to continue taping F8 and it should enter Safe mode. It does not enter it for me. So I guess- I am up for Windows reinstall. I have many games and other useful software installed on this computer- I do not like to reinstall Windows. Any thoughts? Thank you.

Nothing so far. Attempted to do a system restore. Started from DVD. It ran system restore all the way to the end, saying, "Finalizing..." then "Finishing..." just to tell me at the end there was error, system did not get restored and to try something else. Still no Safe mode option found. I noted that now when Windows loads, it shows image on 1st screen but green background on the 2nd screen, as it was in Windows 8.0. (After Win 8.1- it was showing the same image on both screens). So something did get reversed to previous configuration. But still no power to USB ports.

The next step would be to "Refresh system" without affecting files. This supposed to attempt to reinstall OS but preserve files. My concern is that it will do it and still have no power to USB There is also option to use Command Prompt, is there a way to install driver with command prompt?

Are you with me? I post updates in case somebody has the same experience I am going trough, but I hope to have some help. I am not just posting- I need your opinion. If you do not know solution- please, still post something- post what you think. It sux that nobody replied in 24 hours. Thank you.

Ok- I got in to safe mode- I have log in screen- no image, but I can not type the password. It offers to install updates but I can not install them because- well- can not log in. There got to be other way to input data. I can not believe USB is the only way. And - no, I don't have PS2. Frustrating!!!

sounds like your USB devices were told to sleep and power down. You don't want that if you have a usb keyboard. look for a stupid EU setting in your BIOS. I came across a system that had that, it was a European union government regulation to reduce power consumption on computers by putting the USB ports to sleep. The person selected thinking it was something else and ended up not being able to access the computer except after a power reset. also make sure you don't allow your USB hubs to be powered down by windows.

Thank you for your reply. I looked earlier in BIOS- I did not see such setting. USBs work in BIOS- they go off soon as Windows loads and it started after restart. How do I make sure they not powered down by Windows- I can not enter any Windows settings. I can do CMOS reset- what do I have to loose other than my memory would return to factory 1333 Mhz..- what's the name of that profile I set to make it 1600? Been a while...
