I ran the Windows Experience Index after installing the new GPU, and when the WEI started testing direct x and 3d, I started hearing a squealing sound coming form rhe gpu. It is not bad, it actually isn't loud at all, but noticeable. If it is normal for this card, then I don't have a problem with it and won't retun it.
So far I have had this sound only while running the WEI.
I can play Final Fantasy X International on PCSX2 with frame limiter off and not hear a thing.
Is having coil whine normal with the HD 7850, or should I return the card.

You would probably hear that when your card renders at very high framerates :|

I noticed that the card makes the noise during the 3d and direct x tests of the Windows Experience Index.

Like I said, I can play PCSX2(which requires a great gpu to run) at 120 fps and not hear a thing. I imagine having the frame limiter off and playing at suck a high fps would cause the sound to start

That is odd, though I start hearing squealing like that when it gets upwards of 150-200fps for me in older games and in game menus

well I just took the card out and ran the Windows Experience Index again. The noise is gone. It is definitely the videocard. Unless I can come to the conclusion that it is normal, I think I am gonna return it to best buy and get a refund in store credit, then wait to buy a card that is less prone to coil whine.

sounds like a good idea, the guys who commented in the video I linked apparently had better experiences by switching to another manufacturer.

I think I might save up for a gtx 660, or something along that line. my gtx 460 worked great until it died last week. I hardly ever heard it. The only noises I heard it make was the running fan.

Is the 660 better than the 7850, or are they about the same?

Also, best buy will accept the return right? I am aiming for a refund in store credit. They won't complain will they?

alright thanks anyway, and double thanks for the quick replies. I think I'll stay away from radeon cards all together from now on.

WEI index renders hundreds or thousands of frames per second into an offscreen buffer.
This is an extremely unnatural usage case and likely to cause whine in many cards.

If it doesn't do it in games, then why is it a problem?
