Hi all, was hoping to get some more specific advice because I couldn't seem to find any solutions to my issue after hours of searching

In a recent decision to forgo building a new rig, I decided to just do a slight upgrade to my current machine so it doesn't feel like such a dinosaur. Boy, is it really showing its age. Currently, pre- upgrade, my setup is:

Asus p5n-e sli mobo
Core2duo 6400 @ 2.13gh
2gb corsair ddr800 ram
Corsair hx520w psu
Evga Geforce 7900gs

Middle of the line parts when I built it 6 years ago, ancient stuff now. Grabbed another 2gigs of ram, and a radon HD 7770 (sapphire ghzt ed. 1gb ddr5) to throw in there, hopefully to at least get games playable. However, I can't get the video card to output any video to my screen. It seems to boot fine, getting to windows with no problem, just no video. I put my geforce back in, and it posts fine and runs with video, but I can't get the new card to run for the life of me.

I've seen people say that they got this card running on my dinosaur board, so that alleviated my anxiety about pcie cards being backward compatible. I'm using the same pcie slot with both cards. All the fans in my case are spinning, including the video card. I believe its properly seated, as if it weren't, it wouldn't boot all the way to windows, right? I tried connecting it to my projector (primary screen) by dvi-> VGA adapter and VGA cable, as well as hdmi, with no success.bios are up to date, and nvidia drivers are completely uninstalled (even though I assumed this had nothing to do with it, because it doesn't even output on post).

I want to think that its not as complicated an issue as I think it is, because it boots fine, all the way to windows, but I'm just missing an easy setting. Any help would be appreciated!

Well..Did you try to boot with safe mode after adding that new card, just to see if it will get to the desktop? Just a suggestion, could give a try.

Hm.... there's no video output, and I believe booting in safe mode requires me to navigate through menus, which I can't do if I can't see anything =/

But regardless, I think it wouldn't make a difference, kuz there not even any video output for post or bios

So you hear the windows sounds? Oh..I thought it was the restart issue...My mistake.... :)
Then it's probably the GPU. First of all,I know I may sound stupid, but did you connect the monitor directly to the VGA card? If you did that, yet the problem persists, open the case and take out the GPU to start your PC with monitor's connections to motherboard.

Oh, yeah, I can hear the windows chime as it starts, and I'm pretty sure its booting normally, just with no video.

Also, my mob doesn't have onboard integrated video, so I have to pull out the new card and put the old one back in in order to see what I'm doing

So,when you put the old card,it does work...Hm...It's confusing as to why it doesn't work with the new card...Can you just try the card on one of your friend's PC just to see if it works? Or if it doesn't you could give it for the warranty...

hm, its hard because most of my friends have laptops or macs. when i get the chance to find someone with a decent rig thatll lemme give it a go i will, but that might not be for a while. i would like to avoid rma'ing the second card in a row, so i was hoping that maybe i could get it running.

if anyone has any other suggestions or ideas, i would be open to trying! thanks!

Hate to say it but the P5 boards could possibly be prone to the PCI-E problem.

Could you try the card on the other PCI-E slot?

Some old (pre-G31) PCI-E 1.0 implementations do not always work with all PCI-E 2.0/2.1/3.0 cards.
The issue is fairly sporadic. I would see if you can try the card in another system that has PCI-E 1.1 or better.

Yeah....If the card shows same problem in another PC,then probably your card is dead.

I also have same gpu/mb setup and also results to power up having all else normal activity all the way in and out of windows however having no posting of video at all. I fried both pci-e slots, different cpu, memory, power supply, reset BIOS, (looking to update BIOS now in hopes of better outcome) and tried many combination of hardware configs and all test good elsewhere . For instance video card is fine on all my pcie MBs & all testing good with my powercolor hd7770 except p5n-e sli. This is the only board having issues with gpu posting for some reason or another. Im thinking it has something to do with the NVIDIA chipset...NVIDIA gtx 650ti boots but AMD hd7770 has no success...IT WON'T EVEN BE SEEN BY WINDOWS WHEN I USE PCI VIDEO CARD TO BOOT INTO WINDOWS AND TRY HARDWARE DETECTION ,..With or without card instaled windows sees NO CHANGE OF ANY KIND....NOT EVEN WINDOWS HAS ANY CLUE ON IT BEING PRESENT...SO ANYBODY FIND A FIX PLEASE SHARE WITH THE REST OF US ....I have been working on computers for 20yrs....so I do know what I'm doing...its got the upperhand so far. But I will not give up....BIOS update time.....if its available that is...
I tried to see if the card would boot on a few other pcie mainboards and it did without hesitation. I can put NVIDIA gtx650 ti in and have pc post so I don't think its a powersupply issue being both need decent poweesupply to function properly. Not cpu,memory,psu,monitor,cables,....dvi,dvi-to-vga,hdmi, tried it all.......like I said only BIOS update left.....ill let u know if I find one that works.

The old P5x chipsets had broken PCI-E support and some newer cards will not work with them.
Sometimes a BIOS update works and sometimes now

I did end up getting the video card to work, finally. an IT guy I knew suggested that its possible that for some reason on boot that the video card was talking weird with my wireless card, connected to a regular pci slot. I took it out, plugged the video card back in, and BAM! worked. im not sure what your setup it, but if you have anything connected to a pci slot, try taking it out and booting.

other than that, no idea what else it could be.
