Safely grabbing ribbon cables

I have a Toshiba Satellitle laptop computer that i had just laying around and decided to see if i could repair itsvideo problem that it had.

When i exposed the motherboard outside of the laptop casing, the ribbon cable for the keyboard came off suddenly. The tape on the ribbon is nowhere near helpful enough to squeeze the ribbon back into the female connector.

im worried that with any more pressure the cable contacts will begin to bend or become worn.

is there a proper way of inserting a ribbon cable the safe way when it has no tape reinforcement / grip? Is there a proper tool that can grip and wont puncture the ribbon cablr itself as i use it to grip the ribbon and install it into the connector?

and its one of those tight fit ribbons where the length is "just enough", and it has to be angled towards me to be put back into the connector but its a really really tight fit

Solution
Exactly. Those tabs will "lock" it in place so after you get the cable to slide back in, push the tabs back in the lock position and you should be set.

are you sure you didn't pull the cable from the connector housing I know what your talking about with the ones that just have the cable thing is they are supposed to be a tight fit so they don't break loose. tape is just a place holder. just make sure you apply even pressure on both sides and make sure it is even when inserting the cable. the pins can bend ... but as long as you don't actually break a one of the links you should be fine. you will need to apply pressure to get it back in.

Is it one of those paper thin ribbons? If it is, there may be a couple of plastic tabs on the connecter that need to be pulled to the release position. Once they are out, you should be able to slide the ribbon back into the connector easily. Then push the tabs back into place to secure it.

Yes, its those paper thin ribbons, that are coming from the keyboard circuit sheet. I do see two black notches on the connector that seem to "push back", not holding against the connector.

I have to release those out, gently slide the ribbon as much as a can without too much force and just let the notches grip the cable back in?

Okay. Thanks! It did just slide in the other day with this method.... however, it seems that now some of the keys upon boot no longer function.

I think it has to do with the amount of pressure I accidentally placed on the wire and probably bent the contacts.

I will remember this for next time!
