Is my graphics driver causing my system to freeze?

With Windows 8, my system has been freezing up after being idle for periods of time. A cold boot is required to get things working again. I am using a GTX 560 ti on driver 320.49.

From my event log:

Error: The description for Event ID 14 from source nvlddmkm cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer."

Warning: Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

And exactly one second later.

Warning: Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

I had to forcefully shutdown via front panel button.

Information: The process C:\Windows\system32\winlogon.exe (Computername) has initiated the power off of computer Computername on behalf of user Computername\User for the following reason: No title for this reason could be found.

I have had similar issues arise from a faulty SSD which later died. Got the same model replacement. It apparently could also be the graphics card. I only have enough money to replace one or the other. Please help.

Nvidia's 320 drivers have been pretty buggy so you could try do a clean install of an older driver like 314.22, so you could try that before replacing any parts. Too bad for me I'm stuck with this driver

That guy describes my problem exactly, you never know when. I will revert to an older driver, thank you for that information.

Do you mind me asking why you're stuck on 320.49?

I have the 760, the 320.49 is the launch driver and the newer driver is apparently even worse

Thanks, guy. The new new Nvidia 331.58 drivers were just released. I've been looking to see if there were any fixes but people are still saying there are problems:

So, i see its says 400-700 series, but would my GTX 560 actually see benefit? i just can't imagine they spend time to improve on my 3 year old card.Do not install, the driver crash issue is not yet fixed. I just tested it. Use 314.22 instead.

Are you on Windows 8.1 by any chance?

there are changes to WDDM 1.3 that make TDR's invisible, the driver can crash, you might even get a bubble in the corner but you won't see a black screen during the reset

Generally with every driver release there are alotta people who complain lols, even with the 314.22 driver

I wouldn't see any harm in trying, you can always revert back (even if that is a pain in the ass)
I'm personally going to stay put and only update my drivers when I absolutely have to xD
