I'm pretty tired at the time of writing so please excuse any typos, mistakes or things of that nature, I'll probably clean it up when I'm not so drowsy/hazy.

No need for introductions, I've read about girls like you on the back of toilet doors.

Music-related puns aside, I'm looking to upgrade my aging PC so here's what I have at the moment:

Case = Coolermaster Elite 430
PSU = Coolermaster 500W
Motherboard = ASUS M4A87TD USB3
CPU = AMD Athlon II Quad Core x4 (640 3.0Ghz)
CPU Cooler = Stock AMD CPU Fan/Heatsink
RAM = 4GB Kingston HyperX (1333MHz)
HDD = x2 640GB Western Digital Caviar Black SATA-III 7200rpm 64MB Cache
GPU = AMD Radeon HD 6870
OS = Windows 7 Home Premium x64

Don't know if I have a bottleneck, I mean, after doing a quick search, the release dates don't seem too far apart: Athlon II being May 2010 and the 6870 being October, I thought they were far more distant than that.

My (immediate) budget is £300/$500... Although it is a loose figure, but I guess it still serves a purpose in stopping me from going (budget-free) crazy and getting an i7 for gaming or something silly like that. I'm not worrying too much about price at the moment because I'd rather know what is the most appropriate gear for me i.e. components that are going to provide ample performance without being obvious overkill.

I was initially looking at getting an FX-8350 because of the fact that it competes with the 3k and 4k series i5s and i7s up to a certain point, but the more I looked into Intel, the more I could understand the justification of the price because it just seemed to toast the AMD CPUs in almost every instance.

I mean, if Sandybridge/Ivybridge is good enough for gaming then I don't really want to be going and spending £170 on a brand new Haswell since they don't really have much going for them in terms of improved gaming performance. I think I may be able to snag a 2500k off of a friend for under £100, then grab a decent 1155 socket motherboard and pop a gtx 760 in there? I don't know, just some initial thoughts.

What do you guys think?

there nothing wrong with the older sandy or ib cpus. the haswell cpu are only slightly faster then the older chips but not by much. for now i get the cpu and motherboard and reuse all of your old rig that you can. sit on buying a gpu till april of next year. by then nvidia and amd will have dropped there newer cards and you be able to snag the older cards at a better price.

I would upgrade the motherboard/CPU/RAM first, so something Haswell. I would also see if I could recycle the RAM which you should be able to do unless it runs at a high voltage.

If you can get a 2500k for £100 I would most definitely get that, it is about 25% slower than Haswell but you can overclock it to beat the i5 4670k, and the money you save can go on a better PSU.

This is what I would do if I couldn't get the i5 2500k for around about £120.

After that reuse the HD 6870 with the old PSU for awhile then when you have some more money get a better PSU then see about getting a new GPU. There are some nice revised models coming soon that look very nice from AMD...

Okay so, good news.

Got my i5-2500k.
ASRock Z77 Extreme4 is on its way.
Corsair TX650M is also on its way.
Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO should be delivered today (24/10/13).

Still looking at graphics cards though, at the moment the cards that have been floating around my head are the 760, the 7950 and 7970.
