can't overclock the 7970m

i've heard that the 7970m overclocks pretty well, and i've been trying to OC it but without succes. i'm usng msi afterburner 2.2.0 and i've unlocked the sliders but whenever i press apply after i overclock it nothing changes.on afterburner it looks like i've done it but i can't notice any changes. if anything, i get worse performance.
what am i doing wring here?

there are other programs out there but, are generally very similar to each other. there are possibilities of overclocking without software like BIOS modding but, i don't think it's recommended for laptop GPUs.

other than Afterburner, there really isn't much but, off the top of my head, your choices would be EVGA Precision X or Sapphire TrixX.

if those programs don't allow for overclocking either, then i'd say the laptop manufacturer has locked the clocks from going any higher.
