Business computing is generally an integrated system that handles all aspects of your business while at the same time making these aspects readily available to view in one integrated, easy-to use interface. So for example if you had a stock run business you would have one section of your system dealing with purchase orders, one section handling outgoing orders, one allocating stock, another handling accounts etc. These systems are fully integrated across the business so for example if you tried to issue a new purchase orders without enough funds in your accounts the system would block your order. Furthermore with a widespread view across a large company any employee is aware of activity in another department by looking at the management system.

These systems are generally adaptable for all size of business, with the big boys opting for full ERP systems like SAP (http://www.sap.com) or Sage 1000, that provide full CRM solutions. However smaller systems can be found for SMEs that generally provide the essentials such as accounting, project management and stock control tools. Sage has done well in providing modular packages that can be built up as the business expands (http://www.softservconsultants.com/sage/accounts/sage-a...).

There are a lot of tools out there, some open source, some thousands of pounds so please shop around before choosing the software that works for your business.

Hi Sunita9,

there are many different ERP systems out there for financial management. The major players are SAP, Sage 1000, Oracle and Microsoft Dynamics, but these do cost large amounts of money. Or you could try some of the open-source ones such as OpenERP or Postbooks although they might lack the support of the big boys.

Most financial management packages will have the following functions: -

General ledger
Payables/Receivables
Cash Management
Financial Consolodation
Credit Control

Overall they are great and will certainly improve the overall running of your company. Because they are integrated with the other parts of the business they give you a better overall picture if the current state of the business as a whole and also the activity of other employees. For example if you are working in credit control you can keep a sharp eye on customer accounts and block orders for late accounts. Time and expense will certainly be saved and you should look to improve profits with sharper bookkeeping.

Hope this helps.
