Can the am3 socket ever be as good as an i5, is it even capable , if AMD pushed it to its maximum limit.

How good could it be pushed to its maximum.

The answer is probably yes. The reason that Intel changes their sockets so much is because of the new "on-cpu" graphics. AMD does not put graphics on their chips unless they are APUs. This means that AMD can continue to use the AM3+ socket and still upgrade the CPU. Unless they do something huge (which is unlikely) then the socket will probably be the same for the next few years. By that point those CPU will have (hopefully) passed i5 performance
