did you just buy a cable or did it come with a converter box? VGA is an analog signal and HDMI is a digital signal and has to be converted.
I recently tried what you are doing. Someone bought a converter to hook laptop to tv. they had it hooked up through vga but wanted hdmi so they could get sound as well and we could not get it to work. We used a good heavy duty hdmi cable. After searching online alot of reviews said the same thing they could not get it to work.
