I have tried numerous times to change the read only settings and other things to remove files from my thumb drive and to format it. Each time, the "write protected" message appears. How do I fix this?

Try this.
Go to start ,type run and hit enter. In the window that opens type "regedit" and then find this file> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Currentcontrolset\control\storatedevicepolicies

in right side you will be getting writeprotect option, right click that and modify the value from 1 to 0

Hmm. Is there any chance that it has that slider on the side of it that locks the card? Scan it for virus too.

There is no slider lock on the cruzer glide 32 gb. I scanned for virus and it was clean. Still can't remove write protect? Is there any free software sites where I can download something that will fix this problem?

I tried that, and it still indicated that it could not format because of write protect. Even at the command prompt it would not allow formatting. I even went into edit mode and deleting the clubsandisk.exe.config. It would not allow me to save the changes.

Well, if nothing fixes it, sent it back from where you bought it cause it seems to be defective.
