Hi all,
I know this question has been asked before but there is conflicting answers so just wondered if there was a simple straight forward way.
I have bought a custom pc with windows 8 installed on ssd, I've read so many bad things about windows 8 that I've decided to buy windows 7,
Can I just insert windows 7 disk and install it to ssd and let it format/overwrite windows 8.
I have very little knowledge of pc's and read that you have to install various drivers etc.just need easiest way possible
thanks for your time

The source of that information is completely inaccurate, where did you get that information.

Windows 8 runs all games fine, there are no comparability issues...

Is there data I should back up? Its a Christmas present so haven't used it for anything.I've removed gpu ready to buy and install a better one but that's it.You mentioned only having one drive in when installing,is this just a matter of unplugging cable to hdd? When I update Mb drivers do I just go to the manufacturers website and get them from there?Like I said I'm just starting out on trying to learn a bit about pc's,did want to try and build it myself but this one came along.
As far as I know the os is the only thing on the ssd

If you don't have any data that you don't want to lose then there is nothing to back up.

You want to make sure you unplug the sata data cable going into the motherboard from the secondary hard drive (so HDD).
Also make sure you go into the bios and change the boot order to wherever has the windows copy (so optical drive in your case). It will probably change back after you finish installation, although confirm that by going back into bios after installation

New drivers are from the motherboard manufacturer (so like asus gigabyte etc.), except for the dedicated gpu which you usually get from nvidia/amd

To be honest the only reason i want to go to windows 7 is i've read a lot that its no good for games. My son is into Minecraft and gta4 and there are so many reviews saying these dont run that well on windows 8.They'll freeze up randomly or just wont load at all.I also read that windows 8 is going to stop supporting Minecraft and Steam.
I'd be more than happy to keep windows 8 if everything worked ok,the last thing i want is my 12yr old son opening this pc on christmas morning and having compatibility issues.

Compatibility issues usually get ironed out as the makers release fixes for them.

The only thing i saw for minecraft is that it isn't "certified" by the maker for windows 8. Which looked more about politics than about actual compatibility. I would check around for people who actually use (or have tried to use) both and ask their results. While there were definitely big changes between 7 and 8, from what I hear a lot of things stayed fairly similar as well. My 8 year old games that came out around Vista/early 7 days work fine, it would make sense for minecraft, a game that people still add stuff to, would work as well.

Why would Windows 8 stop supporting Steam? The only way Steam will not work on Windows 8 is if Valve wants it to not work.

There is no reason GTA 4 or Minecraft will not run on Windows 8.

Also, I have recently replayed GTA 4 and I use Windows 8 so it works fine. That game is a horrible port though and filled with DRM so it's kind of frustrating that you have to load it through steam, then the social hub, then login through GFWL....

So don't worry about compatibility because it will run everything fine. I would advise you to update Windows 8 to the new 8.1 upgrade(free) too via the Windows 8 store.

I think there was confusion between "refusing to certify" vs. "being able to play". There is a lot of info to be found in a quick google search how the minecraft creator "refused to certify minecraft for windows 8". That being said, he never said that you couldn't play it, nor that it would not work fine, and further googling will point you towards people who got it and it works fine (as well as the post above me ^^^)

I havent gotten around to getting minecraft on this computer, but I'm not really worried about it not working on my windows 8 computers
