hard drive not recognized on older dell computer

I know that, but am not sure how to put it into the format: c/s or if that is correct. The problem I have is it crashed and now won't recognize the hard drive and keeps putting me back to the F1 for F2 and it doesn't let me do anything, I have found a way to get to the ms dos prompt but once there not really sure how to procede as it has been a long time since using DOS functions.
