Hello!

I've been trying to overclock the FX-8350 i've had in my system recently. I've heard that you can get to about 4.8 GHz on a decent air cooler, my system currently has a Cooler Master Geminii s524 in it, which I reasoned should be able to bring me to at least 4.6 Ghz. However, i'm getting really bad temps and unstable system--I'm at 4.6Ghz only using the multiplier, vcore voltage is set to 1.44. My CPU core temp is idling at 47 degrees (i think that's uncomfortably hot) and crashes after extended usage in windows (not even any stress tests like prime95 or anything). Is this normal, or is my cooler just bad? Should I be getting temps like this? Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Your idling temp is definitely too high. It be much lower, but what I cannot say as most 8350 chips will actually misread to around 11-17C at idle. It's only when they warm up that they become more accurate. Two things to consider. First, have you thoroughly cleaned off and reapplied your thermal paste? Second, the voltage you're running may be a bit high. I'm running stable on 4.5GHz at 1.356V. Incremental voltage changes tend to create what would almost appear to be an exponential temperature increase.
