Overclocking 4670K. Did I get screwed by intel?

Just built another computer this time with the Intel Haswell 4670K. My last computer was a 3570K clocked at 4.4 so I am familiar with overclocking. When checking stock voltage when I first got the chip it was at 1.14v ramping up to 1.2 during Intel turbo boost. This surprised me because I thought that was pretty high to start off. I then tried to overclock it and the fastest I can get it stable was 4.2 at 1.277vcore, 1.15 cache voltage, and 1.90 input voltage. I've tried to hit 4.3 by increasing to 1.30vcore getting a boot and then instant crash. I am assuming a got a bad seed from Intel although I guess it could be my motherboard too: AsRock z-87 Extreme 4.

Im not an expert at OC so I may be doing something wrong. Any ideas?

What CPU Cooler are you using? Haswell isn't quite as good at OCing as Ivy is but you should be able to get nearly any 4670k over 4.2ghz with a Noctua NH-D14 or a CoolerMaster V6GT. Given your results, however, I'd guess that you're running a stock cooler, which you just don't want to overclock with.

I myself am running a 4670k with a V6GT at 4.2ghz and 1.185vcore. I max out at like 50C so I clearly could go a lot higher. Therefore, if you're using a good cooler, 4.2ghz should be easy.

I am using a Cool Master Hyper 212 EVO so the temperatures are not the problem. I just cant seem to figure out why my voltages are so high. At 4.2 if I drop below 1.265 it becomes very unstable. It driving me insane!

I got an Asrock z77 Extreme4 with an Ivy Bridge i5 3570k and can tell you that it is pretty good board.

I would suggest setting your LLC to Level 1, and start bumping your Vcore in increments of +0.10 until you are stable. Also disable Spread Spectrum.

Maybe you are suffering from vdroop?

What are your temps at 4.2ghz 1.277v?

So far I love the motherboard so I doubt that's the problem. I've heard of vdroop but am not very familiar with it. Llc is at level 1and I know I have spread spectrum disabled. At 4.2 I get around 70 to 74 degrees after 10 passes in prime. Maybe it is a vdroop problem.
 


Increasing RAM voltage made a big difference for me. Also try increasing cache voltage to 1.190 v.

Vdroop is when the Vcore drops to what it thinks is a stable core voltage, to help with this LLC was created, and it gives you 5 different levels. level 1 is the most aggressive meaning the Vcore stays pretty consisting while level 5 is the less aggressive.

Here is the kicker, Asrock Motherboards had this setting backward(nothing wrong with that). Anyway, but you will need to do some digging and see if yours is backwards or not.

What RAM are you using? and do you have it on Auto or did you set everything manually to manufacturer settings?

If everything is good configuration wise with your RAM, you might want to test it with memtest and see if everything is good with it.

Oh I see. I think level 1 is right but ill have to double check. I am using Team Vulcan Ram 1600 16gb http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820313354

So far I havent even touhched the ram except from enabling XMP. Everything is currently on auto. How much should I increase the voltage with ram typically?
 


Increase it to 1.60 - 1.65 v.

Additional information: I recently tried to get a overclock of 4.3 at 1.305 volts and also tryed to increase my ram voltage but wasn't even able to get one pass in Prime before my computer crashed. Im afraid I might just have to stick with what I got.

Last night was running skyrim which I know is a pretty cpu intensive game and I was running my 4.2 "stable" and my temps hit 90c with 1.275vcore! Prime never even got temps that high! I have no idea what is wrong with this chip. Beginning to think its possibly the mobo. Anyone ever seen high temps like that in skyrim?

Erm... No. I get like 50C in Skyrim generally with 4.2ghz and 1.18Vcore. Skyrim never maxes out my CPU either. I really would back off your OCs... Something is quite wrong here. 90C is unacceptable. Of course, I suppose the mobo could be having issues and not be reporting the proper temps or I dunno. Your situation is just so odd.

All in all, if I were you, I'd back down at least to 4.1ghz and 1.25vcore, if that's stable, or something along those lines. Maybe even try 4.0ghz and 1.20vcore or whatever. I dunno. Your voltages are just so high compared to mine...
As I was considering the voltages I listed in the above paragraph, I realized that I'm pretty sure my 4670k actually runs 4.2ghz stable at 1.1585vcore (I'm running at higher voltage now to try to isolate some BSODs I've been having almost definitely caused by my network adapter, long story)... In that case, we have more than .1Vcore difference for the exact same clock! I'm not the most experienced with OCing but that just seems crazy.

I don't know bro.. I can't get anything stable above 4.0!! I guess that means I take your place as 4670k lottery loser..
 
I would just completely remove the OC and just monitor your temps for now. 90C is cooking your cpu. I would also be removing the heatsink, re-applying a good thermal paste, i recommend noctua nt-h1 (a little better than as5 but has no curing time). Also check the orientation of your heat-sink, toms recently did an article about how the die is positioned under the heat spreader. And as always, check your case air flow, cool air intake front/lower, hot air exhaust upper/rear. Exhausting the hot air is far more important than getting cool air in.

I just ordered a better intake fan. I finally just gave up and returned the motherboard and cpu back to micro center. They didn't have a problem with me swapping out both. I went with an MSI gaming mobo and same cpu will install everything tomorrow. Hopefully I get lucky! Shooting for that 4.8! Haha
 

4.8 pretty much requires de-lidding and/or watercooling.
