External SATA HDD Probl em - Please Help

Okay, so my friend asked me to fix his computer for him, as he is completely rubbish with them :). So basically, what he said had happened was that he was just using it and then it went blank. The typical message of doom came up saying that there was no operating system installed on the disk. So obviously, I assumed his HDD had been wiped. So I used the Windows 8 install utility to access CMD and try to fix his HDD. I went into diskpart and used the 'list volume' tool. To which his CD Drive, and nothing else but the USB with WIndows 8 on it came up. His HDD was not there. So I checked his HDD to see if everything was ok, and all the connections were good. But I tried a spare HDD in it and it worked perfectly. Installed Windows 8 on that and he is good to go. But now I am trying to recover his data for him. I have an external HDD drive which plugs in via USB. But his HDD won't show up anywhere. Not in diskpart, not in Explorer, not in Disk Management. I suspect that it has been assigned the letter C:\ as well as my internal HDD but I cannot be sure. Can anyone please help me? I would be very grateful!

If the drive spins up and doesnt click or make other strange noises there is a possibility that the board on the hdd could be swapped for a working one.

For us to help you more you would need to provide the exact model number of the drive.
