So recently i upgraded to LAN from a Wireless D-Link that provided 48-54mbps. I'm seeing nothing different. Is there supposed to be a difference?

I get the same types of speed in speednet and same ping in games

The router speed, wither wired or wireless, is of concern when you are communicating with other internal devices. Sending files to a HTPC, for instance. Or backing up files to a NAS.

Externally (speedtest.net and games), you will never get faster than what you pay the ISP for. No matter how fast the router capabilities may be.

I figured it was the ISP that limited, i think we have 20-30mbps down and 1mbps up.

Does it really matter if i kept my wireless D-link with a speed of 54mbps or changed to LAN with 100mbps

Wifi is half duplex so would struggle over 24 mbps on 54G, file transfer 3MB/s

You must have a strong signal not to see any difference, I've seen many people plug in a laptop and think they are connected by lan but aren't because the wifi has priority and carries on until turned off with the hot key or button.
