Hi all,

I recently purchased a Lenovo z500. It's a beast of a machine.
It came with Windows 8 single language pack preloaded. The machine has 1TB HDD, so my original plan was to wipe out the hard drive of win8 and install my own copy of windows 8 pro in 750 GB partition and Linux mint on the remaining partition. How do I go about doing that??

And I am confused whether to wipe off the preloaded win8 or not. Will I be able to claim warranty without preloaded win8?

If not, can I shrink the preloaded partition and go about doing my stuff??

I'm in a lot of confusion so any help would be grateful.

Solution
First off, load up your laptop with windows 8 preload and make the restore dvd's right away.
If you wipe your hard drive you will also wipe the restore partition and you will be screwed when you need to bring the laptop back to manufactors default windows configuration.

After you make the restore discs, you simply put in the windows 8 pro install disc and install it. Then install Linux Mint after.

Helpful installation instructions of linux mint can be found here:

Having created a backup as suggested (I would also create a System Image on a USB drive!) why not boot from your 8 Pro disk and see if Upgrade is an option? Worth a try...and be aware that some UEFI's secure boot will cause problems for installing Linux...

Yeah my friend suggested the same. It would be helpful if you would point me to a guide on how to create restore disc.

Will setting it to legacy boot mode eliminate the problem??? If possible I'll try upgrade. Do you think 8.1 is worth over 8???

Legacy boot should work...Windows 8 Forum has been packed with 8.1 problems, I would wait a while before deciding...
