Hi, I'm looking todays equivalent of last year's HD7850 (or better).

Thats just a starting point, but it can be better. I would like to know the most popular performance-price GPU. Power efficiency is also an important factor for me (I can pay more for efficiency).

AMD looked like a good deal last year, but I also trust NVIDIA.

Additionnal infos:

Budget: Lower then 300$, money is not an issue, but good deals are appreciated and I'm only an occasionnal gamer.
Compagny: Any that fits my criterias.
No overclocking needed.

Thank you for your help, I trust your expert oppinion.

The obvious answer is the HD7950.

However at the same price point ($250) the GTX 760 is probably the better option.

If you are willing to go as high as $300, then the R9 280X is a very good deal at that price.

It depends on the manufacturer and model. The average still seems to be around $250.

You can even find GTX 760s as low as $230.

Thank you for your answers.

It looks like the 760 and 7970 are pretty close, is the performance similar, because if yes the 7970 is 250W and the 760 is 170W of TDP, and the power efficiency would also be an argument.

Also, should I consider paying more for the R9 280X?

Yep the 7970 is a fair bit more powerful than the 760, the 280x is a 7970 running at 950MHz
You'd have to justify if the price difference is worth it to you :p
Here's a comparison between a stock 7970 and a 760

nope the 7970 is much more powerful than the 760. btw the r9 280x is just a rebranded 7970 with higher clock speeds. read the belowl

Interesting, it has 256 more shader cores though, but I see your point.

So, the 7970 would be the way to go?

I think I made a typo I meant 7950, but is the 7970 worth the 40$ more considering I'm not a hardcore gamer?

Strongly suggest sapphire for their cooling. Msiis equally good , including asus but beware asus cards are known for their size n to take up massive slots.

Thank you you to all your suggestions!
I chose a used Asus 7770 that I bought on Kijiji for 50$ from an ex Bitcoin miner, he had a set of 3.
Works as expected, good 1680x1050 on Far Cry 3, I did not try any newer games,
