PSU - ATX 12v 4 - 8 pin connector?

So, my old PSU had 1 ATX 12v 4 pin, connected to the top row. but my new PSU has 2 but you can split them in half, so do I use one or two? I used to use one.

Infact what does ATX 12v do?

I also upgraded to a Asus GeForce GTX 650 Sorry if I put this in wrong category.

If the motherboard has a 8 pin power connector, use both. If not, only one.
It provides power to the CPU and CPU fan.
