when I boot fedora 19 xfce from my bootable disk, and start fedora live (regardeless of graphics mode basic or not, it is the same), I get a grey screen for a second, then it appears to load as normal, the bars go across the bottom, then that dissappears, then i get the error:
[ 65.549534] HSLH sound/pci/intel18x0m. c:853 Unable to initialise codec #0

What does this mean and how can I get around it?

EDIT:
noticeed that if i leave it for a considerable amount of time, I get a white bar right across the screen at the top.

not too sure. It's made by tiny, but I don't know much more than that. I am unable to check it's specifications on the computer.

It's very old
It has one 20GB harddrive (winXP SP3) and one 10GB harddrive (Currently blank)
It has a CD-RW drive (not origional to the computer), so it is incapable of reading DVD's
it's ethernet card is not origional either (though thats unrelated to this)

Thats about all i know...
not much help there.

I believe you. I have an older Sony Vaio with an AMD K6 processor. It will not run any modern versions of Linux. It will only run some of the "lite" versions, like Puppy because it doesn't meet the hardware requirements of Ubuntu, Fedora, or OpenSuse. That is why I was asking.

64bit was not introduced by Intel until the LGA 775 Pentium 4 6xx series. The only difference between the Pentium 4 5xx and 6xx series was the 64bit instruction set.
