I'm building a new system, I'm thinking of 8.1 for its efficiency, but I master 7 pertty well. Are the improvements in 8.1 worth the learning curve or is 8.1 like win vista or ME (to skip)?
You will have the start button back in Windows 8.1, but not the Start button. I would recommend classic shell or Start8, Start8 been working great for me since the Windows 8 release.

Thank you you to all your suggestions!
I gave Win 8 a try, I cried, then I noticed that it was fast.
I chose to keep it when I discovered that it is possible to bypass Metro interface in Taskbar properties/Navigation tab (lots of nice check-boxes...)
The fake start button is much better when you right click it to the power user menu... (same as Windows+X)
