is Nvidia more for Active 3D and amd radeon more for passive 3D ?

Solution
Generally speaking, the 7950 wins hands down, but since it seems you are interested in 3D, the answer is a bit more muddled.

The answer probably comes down to how much you think you are going to use the 3D. If you think that you will use 3D a lot (more than 2D), I would lean towards the 580. Otherwise, go for the 7950. Do be aware that if you go for the 580, you are choosing a slightly slower card that uses more power and is from an older generation.

Both should work for passive 3D. nVidia is more agressive (still not very much) when it comes arguing the case of active vs. passive than AMD is, but both have solutions for passive 3D. I would personally go with nVidia because the 3D stuff is built into the drivers and seems to be more coherent than AMD's offerings.

Full disclosure, my main rig has dual GTX 570s and a BenQ XL2420TX (active 3DVision), so I know nVidia's situation in regards to 3D better than AMD's.
